Physics 6 Tutorial 6 - Mathematical Treatment of Waves

Summary

In this tutorial we will look at how waves can be represented mathematically using the sine function for the displacement.  We then look at how calculus can be used to relate other properties to the wave motion.  We consider a mathematical approach to phase. We then go on to see how waves superpose, and use a mathematical model to show the idea of beats.  We then look at how Fourier analysis can break down a complex waveform into simple sine waves, and how reversing the process can enable us to synthesis musical sounds.
