GCSE Physics Unit 2

Now we will build on the Core Physics principles to build up our understanding of Additional Physics.  If you are going to do A level Physics, you will need a sound understanding of Additional Physics in order to progress.

We first of all start to look at forces and consider the ideas of balanced and unbalanced forces.  We then go on to consider how forces make vehicles move, and stop.  Physics is at the heart of safety in our cars.  Then we will think about how gravity acts on a parachutist, and then on how forces stretch elastic objects.

The strange-looking contraption on the right is pedal-powered eight-seater vehicle made in Holland.  One person drives it while all the others pedal.  In the middle is a basket for a barrel of beer.  Presumably the driver is not allowed to share.

When a force makes something move, it gives it energy.  All moving objects have momentum, which explains what happens in collisions.  Changes in momentum cause forces, and forces cause changes in momentum.

Electricity is a vital component of our lives, and we will look at how static electricity can play tricks, be very useful, or a damned nuisance.  We then look at how current electricity is used in circuits, before considering how we use mains electricity safely at home.

Nuclear Physics looks at the structure of atoms and how unstable atoms give off radiation.  Radioactivity sounds scary, but in reality, it is all around us and we have evolved to live with it.  It can be very useful, but, if misused, it can be dangerous.

Finally we look at the process of fission and fusion.  Both are used in nuclear bombs.  Fission can be controlled to use in nuclear power, but fusion is a lot more difficult to control sufficiently to get power from.
