GCSE Physics Unit 3

The material in this unit looks at some of how we make Physics work for us.  A lot of technology is applied Physics.

We will first look at how Physics is used in medicine, looking at X-rays and ultrasound that are used by doctors to diagnose illness or injury and to check on the health of the unborn child.    Then we will look at how opticians use lenses to correct short sight and long sight.  We will the look at optical fibres, used by doctors to look inside the patient without having to carry out exploratory surgery.

Then we will investigate how physics is used by engineers, looking at the importance of the centre of mass.  We will then consider how moments are important in keeping things stable.  We will go on to look at hydraulics that are used in a variety of machines like excavators, as well as braking systems on cars.  We then go on to circular motion that is important in objects that turn, as well as keeping satellites in orbit.

Finally we investigate how electric motors and transformers work.

Syllabus

Data Sheet.  (Print this off and use it throughout the year.  It's also good lavatory reading - knowing where a formula is will save you a lot of time in the exam.)
